What is Coding?
Exploring coding basics for kids
Computers are pretty incredible. But they can’t think for themselves (yet, anyway). They need people to do the thinking for them, and not just any people – coders (sometimes called programmers)! Coders write special instructions that tell computers what to do to achieve a specific outcome. Thinking like a programmer means using human-powered creativity and innovation to break down challenges and solve them one problem at a time. Coding is also about teamwork, imagination, having fun, and creating something brand-new.

The best bit: anyone can learn how to code. That’s what Camp Coding Camp is all about. Our coding for kids videos help students learn about coding and its super-duper powerful potential to make our world a better place.
Learning coding for beginners
We can hear you from here. What is coding about? Coding is about writing instructions for a computer in a language the computer can understand, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. When exploring coding basics for kids, you’ll soon discover that the skills needed to code your way through problems can help us outside the classroom or office, too. Coding is about:
- Using our creativity to solve problems
- Asking questions and exploring the possibilities
- Recognizing that there is more than one way to overcome a challenge
- Looking for the simplest and most efficient solution to a problem
- Making our lives easier using technology
- Creating things that didn’t exist before
- Becoming logical and critical thinkers
- Breaking down big challenges into smaller problems and solving them one at a time
Learn about coding because things don’t appear out of thin air
What do you do when you want a chocolate cake? You decide to bake one. You find your favorite chocolate cake recipe and follow the instructions step-by-step. The finished product is a deliciously decadent cake – a chocolate lover’s dream! Of course, the cake didn’t appear out of thin air. YOU had to make it one action at a time. Coding works in much the same way. Learning computer programming means recognizing that the technology we use every single day was built by coders – usually by a whole team of coders. For example, a real-life human being created that video game you can’t stop playing. Likewise, when you send your best friend a text message on their birthday, you are using code built by a person. The same goes when you buy movie tickets online, cook chicken in your air fryer, and even watch a YouTube video.

Computers, smartphones, appliances, and other devices seem to work like magic. But after an intro to coding for beginners, you’ll realize that there’s a whole lot of creativity, innovation, and human power behind the technology.
Why learning computer science is so important for kids
Kids are naturally curious and have a knack for creative problem-solving tasks. That means they are primed to excel when learning how to code. Camp Coding Camp doesn’t teach kids to code in a specific language. Instead, it helps them think logically, critically, and creatively, just like a coder. Plus, it’s empowering to know that every person – kids included – has the power to build something out of nothing. With computer programming basics down, we can all use our human intelligence and creativity to make our lives easier and our world a better place for all.
