Learn About Lines

Lines are everywhere. Just look around you – at your keyboard, your desk, even your hands! In fact, the very words you are reading right now are built using lines.

In our basic lines videos, we cover everything from horizontal and vertical lines to curvy and diagonal lines. We’ve got a catchy song, and an adorable bunny rabbit, too.

Here’s some more info about our math videos for kids.

Lines – why are they so important?

Why do kids need to know about lines?

The simple answer is this: lines are absolutely everywhere. As soon as you start thinking about it, you’ll find lines on everything you own. You’ll find thick lines and thin lines, long lines and short lines, straight lines and curved lines… The list goes on.

When we learn to recognize lines on everyday objects, we become more skilled artists. That’s why it’s a great idea for creative children to listen to songs about lines!

Horizontal lines go left to right

Need help teaching about horizontal lines? No worries. We cover these side-to-side lines in our line videos for kids.

Let’s start by looking at the word: horizontal. Can you spot the hidden word?

Think of the horizon. It’s a great way to remember horizontal lines.

That’s right! Horizontal has the word horizon in it. That’s because horizontal lines go from left to right, right to left, just like the horizon.

Horizontal lines are calm and soothing. They are still and quiet, slow and unmoving.

Vertical lines go up and down

What about teaching vertical lines? We’ve got your back for this, too.

Vertical lines go up and down, down and up. Vertical lines stand tall like a tree, proud like a flag pole, stable like a skyscraper.

Vertical lines go up and down (or down and up)!

Look around you – can you spot the difference between horizontal and vertical lines?

Diagonal lines are on the move

Finally – diagonal lines.

They’re not quite horizontal, and not quite vertical. Diagonal lines are somewhere in between. They go across from high to low, low to high.

Diagonal lines are great for skiing on!

Diagonal lines can seem like they are on the move. They evoke action and excitement. Just imagine skiing down a slope, or soaring down a ramp on your skateboard. You can thank diagonal lines for your adrenaline rush!

More lines!

You know horizontal and vertical. Now you know diagonal. Are there any more types of lines?

You bet there are!

So many lines to discover!

In our lines video for kids, we demonstrate the effect of free organic lines, harsh geometric lines, intuitive gestural lines, playful zig-zags, and ever-growing spirals.
